Dubai: United Arab Emirates beat North Korea 5-3 on penalties in the quarterfinals of the Asian Games soccer tournament in Indonesia on Monday to set up a semi-final showdown with Japan on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Mohammad Al Shamsi dived to his left to save North Korea’s fourth So Jong-hyok, before Rashed Musabbah calmly scored the winner, after the game ended 1-1 in normal time.

This is the second consecutive penalty shootout in the UAE in this tournament after having also defeated host Indonesia 4-3 in the last 16 on Friday.
He also avenged North Korea’s 1-0 triumph over the Junior Whites at the same stage in this competition at the last Asian Games in South Korea four years ago.
The United Arab Emirates slipped through their group as the fourth of the four best runners-up after losses to Syria 1-0 and China 2-1 in the wake of a 4-1 win over East Timor.

Kim Yu-song put North Korea on the front 63 minutes after focusing on a Kang Kuk-chol center, but the UAE equalized through Ali Yahyaee four minutes later with a similar center and head supplied by Zayed Al Ameri.
The Koreans had another header from Kim Yu-song from a corner, not allowed just 10 minutes after their first game for a supposed push against Ahmad Al Mehrzi.
The decision forced the game into overtime after Kim Kuk-bom hit the post in 98 minutes.
In the shooting, Ahmad Al Attas, Zayed Al Ameri, Khalid Al Dhanhani and Hussain Abdullah were converted as well as Kim Yu-song, Jang Kuk-chol and Ri Un-chol, but when So Jong-hyok missed the room, he was down to Musabbah to seal the victory.
Maciej Skorza’s team now plays against Japan from 4.30 pm (UAE time) on Wednesday after Samurai Blue defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Monday.
Yugo Tatsuta’s own goal before half-time canceled Yuto Iwasaki’s first goal after the first hour, before Iwasaki completed his clash with a winner in the 73rd minute.
In the other half of the draw, South Korea also beat Uzbekistan 4-3 thanks to a late penalty in Hwang Hee-chan’s extra time in the 117th minute, after he finished 3-3 in normal time.
South Korea had a 2-1 lead at halftime with two goals from Hwang Ui-jo at the sides of Jaloliddin Masharipov’s effort.
Uzbekistan then came back to win 3-2 after goals from Ikromjon Alibaev in the second half and an own goal from Hwang Hyun-soo, but Ui-jo completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes of advantage to send the game to extra time.
South Korea will play against Vietnam in the other semifinal on Wednesday starting at 1 pm (UAE time) after the Vietnamese beat Syria 1-0 in extra time in the other quarterfinals, courtesy of a winner in the 108th minute of Van Toan Nyuyen.
