Shami seals a good session for India while the batsmen of England return to fight

SOUTHAMPTON: Mohammed Shami fired Keaton Jennings with what became the last ball before lunch to leave India on the third day of the fourth test against England in Southampton on Saturday.

England was 92 for three in its second chance, only 65 races ahead.

Joe Root, the captain of England, was not 30 years old, as India pressed for a victory that would level this five-game series with 2-2.

It seemed that Jennings’ low pressure would pass through the session until Field Marshal Shami, from the edge of the wicket, had it for 36.

England checked, more in hope than expected, but with Jennings stuck in the fold, the original decision of Australian referee Bruce Oxenford was confirmed.

England started Saturday’s play in six without losing.

There were 21 races behind, after Cheteshwar Pujara’s excellent score was not, his first test in England, had guided India to a total of 27 first innings, with retired forward Moeen Ali taking five for 63.

Alastair Cook (two not out), the leading scorer of the all-time test in England, and left-handed starter Jennings (four not out) needed runs.

But Cook fell by 12 when, attracted by driving in a full and wide delivery of Jasprit Bumrah, he had an outer edge in the second slide that KL Rahul clung to on the third attempt.

England now had 24 for one and that soon became 33 for two.

Ali, surprisingly promoted to number three instead of Root, became the last victim of Ishant Sharma’s excellent bowling for left-handed hitters from all over the field when he loosely pushed a ball that embedded itself in the central stump and saw a tip resulting superbly trapped under by Rahul.

The Indian-style shooting outfielder had no doubt that the ball had been carried away, but the officials in the field called the third referee Joel Wilson to make sure.

Wilson duly confirmed what seemed obvious to the naked eye, with the so-called Ali, who had made a valuable 40 in the first innings of England, 246, with nine.

The only drawback for India was that Sharma received two official warnings for running on the pitch from Oxenford, one more and the fast bowler could not play again in the rest of the innings.

Root entered number four and had turned eight when he saw that India’s criticism of Bumrah’s appeal was rejected because the ball was passing over the stumps.

The captain of England, putting his foot in the throwing of the ball, led Bumrah in quadrature by four.

Jennings, averaging a meager 22 on the test cricket and discussing his place in England after a first attempt at duck, reversed and then swept two quarters in successive fumbles from the off-line Ravichandran Ashwin to relive the memories of his hundred on the debut against India in Mumbai two years ago.

Root led Shami to the ground for a textbook limit, but it was India who finished the session at the top.
