Judge Tahira was sworn in as the first female president of the Pakistani High Court

QUETTA: In a historic oath-taking ceremony, Judge Tahira Safdar was sworn in as the first female president of the Pakistani supreme court on Saturday.

Held at the Governor’s House, Judge Tahira’s oath was administered by the President of the Supreme Court of Balochistan (BHC), Muhammad Khan Achakzai.

His appointment as president of the BHC tribunal was confirmed in July by the President of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar.

She replaced Judge Noor Muhammad Meskanzai, whose term ended on Friday. Judge Tahira will serve as the president of justice of BHC on October 4, 2019.

In addition, she has rendered her legal services as the first civilian judge in Balochistan. She also enjoys the different stature of being the first woman named in all the positions she has served.

Born on October 5, 1957, Judge Tahira is the daughter of notable lawyer Syed Imtiaz Baqri Hanafi.

She is part of the special tribunal that is trying the treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
